Elmwood Cottage provides an excellent base for exploring the stunning scenery of the North York Moors National Park, and is fantastic for ramblers and cyclists as it overlooks Grinkle Moor and the famous weathered Wainstones, which can be found along the route of the Cleveland Way. There are many wonderful walking routes locally including Captain Cook's Monument and Roseberry Topping which boasts fantastic views out across the moors, as well as an abundance of fantastic cycle tracks right across the National Park. The picturesque village of Great Ayton is just a few minutes' drive away and is steeped in history, aided by its connections to Captain Cook. Visit the museum that served as his school room, or enjoy a relaxed picnic beside the river. There is a good selection of shops, mostly situated on and around the high street, together with traditional pubs and a famous ice cream parlour.
The historic market town of Stokesley is a couple of miles away with its wide cobbled streets lined with tempting tea rooms, pubs, restaurants and independent shops. Head to the coast and explore some of the many coves and bays dotted along the Yorkshire coastline from hidden gems such as Runswick Bay to the hustle and bustle of Whitby with its many events and festivals throughout the year. And as for beaches, there are mile upon mile of golden sands and rockpools - keep an eye out for fossils as you explore!
Inland, there are miles of stunning countryside to explore, ancient abbeys, traditional market towns including Northallerton, Bedale, Richmond, Helmsley, Thirsk and Ripon which are all worth a visit. Further afield is the ancient city of York which is also worth visit. Beach 12¾ miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 2 miles.
